Abstract
This is a 90m resolution raster dataset describing the relative risk of sedimentation to municipal water supplies if a catastrophic fire were to occur in a given watershed on the western Mogollon Plateau in Arizona. It was created as part of the Forest Ecosystem Restoration Analysis (ForestERA) project to support landscape-scale forest restoration planning efforts by a broad group of stakeholders including federal and state agencies, academic institutions, and non-governmental entities.
Purpose
We developed this layer in consultation with USGS and Salt River Project (SRP) hydrologists who identified municipal water supplies inside and outside of the Western Mogollon Plateau study area. Municipal water supplies were defined as reservoirs that provide household water to communities. This layer is not intended to capture other important water uses, such as irrigation, recreation, or fisheries. We evaluated the watersheds in the study area that drain into municipal water supplies for their risk to impact those water supplies. Watersheds containing reservoirs were given a value of one, whereas watersheds feeding more distant reservoirs were given values of one or less based on an assessment of the relative probability that sediment transport would reach those reservoirs following a wildfire. This analysis is based on preliminary 6th order watershed boundaries supplied by the US Forest Service.
Supplementary Informatio
The primary input data were developed by the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Geological Survey. They are stream channels, soils, slope, and distance from resevoirs.
We have not undertaken an accuracy assessment on this layer. Such an assessment would require ground data that are not currently available.
These data are intended for regional analyses over spatial extents on the order of tens to hundreds of thousands of acres, and were not developed for use at finer spatial scales, although they may be useful for some applications at those finer scales.
